Geboren 1948 in Luzern (Schweiz), wo er auch lebt. Fredy Studer ist Autodidakt. Seine Spielerfahrungen sind so vielseitig wie seine Freelance-Aktivitäten mit Musikern von „A“ wie John Abercrombie bis „Z“ wie John Zorn. Studer erhielt etliche Preise und Auszeichnungen und konzertiert weltweit. Gegenwärtige Bands und Projekte sind das Trio mit KATHARINA WEBER und FRED FRITH, das Jimi Hendrix Projekt mit CHRISTY DORAN, ERIKA STUCKY und THOMY JORDI, das Perkussion-Trio mit ROBYN SCHULKOWSKY und JOEY BARON, die Band Urumchi mit SAADET TÜRKÖZ, HANS HASSLER und ALFRED ZIMMERLIN, Oeuvre mit JASPER VAN’T HOF, HARRY SOKAL und STEFAN LIEVESTRO sowie DR.O.G.E (Drums, Organ, Guitar Ensemble) mit DOMINIK BLUM und DAVE GISLER. Fredy Studer war einer der ersten Schlagzeuger, der offene Improvisation und Grooves in seinem Stil verband. Die Fachzeitschrift „Drums & Percussion“ schreibt: „… Der Schweizer Fredy Studer ist ohne Zweifel einer der innovativsten Drummer Europas …“. 2014 wurde er vom renommierten deutschen Magazin „Jazz Thing“ in die Reihe „EUROPEAN JAZZ LEGENDS“ gewählt. Studers Wirken ist auf über hundert Tonträgern dokumentiert.

Fredy Studer was one of the first drummers to incorporate open improvisation and grooves to his style. The specialist journal „Drums & Percussion“ wrote:
„… without doubt, Swiss drummer Fredy Studer is one of the most innovative drummers in Europe …“. His name was included in the series „EUROPEAN JAZZ LEGENDS“ by the renowned magazine „Jazz Thing“ in 2014. His works and collaboration has been documented on more than a hundred recordings.
